About Oral Cancer
|
Worldwide, more than 481,000 cases of oral cancer are
diagnosed every year. 3,400 people in Canada this year
will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer. 1,150 of
those cases will result in death (
Canadian Cancer Statistics
, 2008).
Research has shown that with early detection the long-term
survival rates for oral cancer greatly improve.
In 84% of cases, a dentist can detect signs of Oral
Cancer during a comprehensive oral examination (
Clinical Practice Guidelines
, 2008).
Usually signs of Oral Cancer are present in oral lesions - a
white or red patch in an oral cavity . The signs and
symptoms of oral cancer and pre-malignant lesions are more
common with individuals who have a history of excessive
tobacco and alcohol consumption or chewing betel nut.
The
Canadian Dental Association
states that the 3 most common sites for oral cancer are the
sides and bottom of your tongue and areas under your
tongue. The warning signs include:
-
Bleeding that you can't explain
-
Open sores that don't heal within 7 to 10 days
-
White or red patches
-
Numbness or tingling
-
Small lumps and thickening on the sides or bottom of your
tongue, the floor or roof of your mouth, the inside of
your cheeks or on your gums.
Until recently dentists have had few tools to help
diagnose oral cancer at an early stage. OralAdvance™
is at the forefront of innovative products designed to
make oral cancer's high death rate a statistic of the past.
